Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Major $34 Million Deal.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The contract grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking between fourth and tenth.
  • An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.

The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 soon, enters a promising lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with recording often, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The very next day in the final against the USA, he hit a game-tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent title triumph.

The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
