Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed fury after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.

The Recording That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all made an vow to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Reaction

The video message reportedly prompt a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he declared: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Answer

Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership issued a combined declaration condemning the comments.

"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous national pride and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and retract his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.

Lawmakers' Firm Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this United States and made an vow to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it punishable by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."

Further Political Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of elected officials."

He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."

"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative declared. "There are active officials of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."

She stated: "The sanctity of our military rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
