European Cup Action This Evening: Chelsea v Barcelona & Additional Games

Welcome to a fresh evening of electrifying Champions League football. Nine fixtures are set for this evening, with 3 English clubs in play. Chelsea face Barça in the marquee fixture of the evening, whilst The Magpies travel to the French side and Manchester City host Leverkusen.

League Table

It's the midway point of the group stage, meaning the rankings is starting to take shape. All six British teams are currently in the top 12, however there are only 2 pts between 5th and sixteenth position, thus there's a sense of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. It’s all up for grabs.

  • Ajax 0-1 Benfica (5.45pm)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (17:45)

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from CĂ´te d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have a peedie bit of history.

Early Match Updates

Only a single goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 lead at Ajax.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although Newcastle traveled to the French south coming off their restorative 2-1 home English top-flight win over City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole away win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

Not that Howe was overly keen to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The Champions League is distinct from Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are sixth in the Champions League standings, with 9 pts from a available twelve and direct progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can draw parallels between them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Scott Murray, the MBM equivalent of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
