Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term surfaced several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are still being committed. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
