A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the residence was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
