Tehran's Leaders Admonish Trump Against Overstep a Major 'Boundary' Regarding Demonstration Interference Statements

The former president has warned of involvement in the Islamic Republic should its government use lethal force against demonstrators, resulting in cautionary statements from senior Iranian officials that any American interference would cross a “red line”.

Through a social media post on recently, the former president stated that if the country were to fire upon demonstrators, the US would “come to their rescue”. He further stated, “we are prepared to act,” without explaining what that might mean in practice.

Demonstrations Continue into the Sixth Day Amid Financial Turmoil

Protests in Iran are now in their sixth day, marking the biggest in recent memory. The current unrest were sparked by an steep fall in the Iranian rial on recently, with its worth dropping to about a historic low, further exacerbating an existing financial crisis.

Several citizens have been reported killed, among them a volunteer for the paramilitary organization. Footage circulate showing security forces armed with shotguns, with the audio of gunfire audible in the background.

Iranian Officials Deliver Strong Rebukes

In response to the statement, an official, counselor for the country's highest authority, warned that the nation's sovereignty were a “definitive boundary, not fodder for reckless social media posts”.

“Any external involvement targeting the country's stability on false pretenses will be severed with a swift consequence,” he posted.

Another senior Iranian official, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, accused the foreign powers of having a hand in the demonstrations, a typical response by Tehran in response to domestic dissent.

“Trump must realize that US intervention in this internal issue will lead to destabilisation of the Middle East and the destruction of Washington's stakes,” Larijani wrote. “The American people must know that Trump is the one that started this adventure, and they should pay attention to the safety of their soldiers.”

Context of Tensions and Protest Scale

Iran has previously warned against foreign forces deployed in the region in the past, and in recent months it attacked Al-Udeid airbase in the Gulf after the US struck Iranian nuclear enrichment sites.

The present unrest have taken place in Tehran but have also extended to other cities, such as Isfahan. Business owners have gone on strike in protest, and youth have taken over university grounds. Though financial hardship are the primary complaint, protesters have also voiced calls for change and condemned what they said was corruption and mismanagement.

Presidential Approach Changes
