Rock Climbing in the Peaks

Including total beginners will soon be scaling protected Peak District outcrops on this two-day course. Participants of every skill level – including beginners – will be taught how to design and produce modern art. Part of the schedule will be spent outdoors, working on guided exercises en plein air. These charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be worked on in the workspace, with attendees producing a number of abstract landscapes in acrylics to be displayed in the local community. Participants has exclusive access of the hotel, which is centered on an open courtyard and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The fee covers five days’ painting tuition; full board; and an trip to the nearby fortress and other local sights.

Plant-Based Cooking in the Algarve

This Mediterranean foodie getaway, set on a riverside villa in the inland Portuguese region, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Participants will learn to produce meze spreads, attend a falafel-making workshop, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses like spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are trips to the village market and a local vineyard to taste Portuguese wines, along with leisure time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the deck or swim in the infinity pool. The villa, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, as well as safari tents in the grounds.

Hip Hop in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an energizing, inclusive three-day dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format each day is a high-energy warm-up session, followed by several hour-and-a-half workshops teaching various street dance styles, then an 60-minute jam to show off those solos. Dancers are split into groups according to skill level, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to popping and locking, all the way to experienced performers or teachers. This event does not provide accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into central London.

Maritime Singing Weekend in Cornwall

This coastal town is the excellent spot for a maritime music retreat. Guests will be taught traditional shanties from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. There will be vocal warmups, breathing exercises, stagecraft advice and a closing performance. The holiday is based at a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. Full board are included, including a Cornish cream tea on the first day, breakfast options, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not provided. Everyone join in: “How to handle the drunken sailor …?”

Creative Writing in Crete

Writer and lecturer Greg Mosse runs the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He explores everything from plot, characters, locations and tension, to sending manuscripts to publishers. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will co-host events at the start and finish of the retreat. The retreat is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – 10 private accommodations surround a central garden with a pool (companions are welcome to come along). On the last night, budding authors mark the occasion with a musical performance in the garden and a farewell dinner.

Introduction to Beekeeping in Mid Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a wide range of programs on eco-living: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This two-day course will help participants learn the basics of apiary management, explore the life cycle of honeybees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. The weekend is also a chance to de-stress in the organization's sustainably managed forests, which are habitat for polecats, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Bed and breakfast the evening prior is £80, and full-board accommodation during the course is 97 pounds.

Sailing for Novices in Essex

These recently launched weekend sailing courses are spent on Wayfarers and keelboats on the estuary in Essex. They are aimed at adult beginners learning the ropes or those with some knowledge who want a refresher. Sailors can improve their helming, build their nautical skills and aim for the Royal Yachting Association’s levels one to three in a supportive atmosphere. There are non-residential and overnight options, with accommodation in basic shared rooms in the waterfront sailing school. The non-residential package includes lunches, while the residential package covers two nights' stay and full board, from full English breakfasts to evening barbecues.
