Venturing into this Globe's Spookiest Grove: Contorted Trees, UFOs and Spooky Stories in Romania's Legendary Region.

"They call this location an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," states an experienced guide, his exhalation creating puffs of mist in the crisp night air. "Numerous individuals have disappeared here, it's thought there's a gateway to a parallel world." Marius is leading a traveler on a nocturnal tour through what is often described as the world's most haunted grove: Hoia-Baciu, a section spanning 640 acres of old-growth indigenous forest on the outskirts of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Hundreds of Years of Enigma

Stories of bizarre occurrences here date back a long time – this woodland is named after a area shepherd who is said to have vanished in the distant past, accompanied by his entire flock. But Hoia-Baciu achieved global recognition in 1968, when a military technician named Emil Barnea photographed what he described as a flying saucer hovering above a oval meadow in the heart of the forest.

Countless ventured inside and failed to return. But don't worry," he states, turning to the traveler with a grin. "Our tours have a 100% return rate."

In the time after, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yoga practitioners, shamans, UFO researchers and supernatural researchers from worldwide, interested in encountering the strange energies said to echo through the forest.

Modern Threats

Despite being a top global pilgrimage sites for paranormal enthusiasts, the forest is at risk. The western suburbs of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of over 400,000 residents, described as the tech capital of the region – are expanding, and construction companies are pushing for permission to cut down the woods to construct residential buildings.

Barring a limited section home to area-specific oak varieties, the grove is lacking legal protection, but Marius hopes that the company he was instrumental in creating – the Hoia-Baciu Project – will contribute to improving the situation, persuading the local administrators to appreciate the forest's significance as a travel hotspot.

Chilling Events

As twigs and autumn leaves split and rustle beneath their boots, Marius tells some of the traditional stories and alleged supernatural events here.

  • A popular tale tells of a young child going missing during a group gathering, then to return five years later with no recollection of what had happened, having not aged a moment, her attire lacking the smallest trace of dirt.
  • Frequent accounts detail cellphones and photography gear unexpectedly failing on stepping into the forest.
  • Emotional responses include complete terror to states of ecstasy.
  • Some people report noticing unusual marks on their arms, detecting ghostly voices through the forest, or sense hands grabbing them, although sure they are alone.

Study Attempts

Despite several of the accounts may be impossible to confirm, there are many things clearly observable that is definitely bizarre. All around are vegetation whose bases are warped and gnarled into bizarre configurations.

Different theories have been proposed to clarify the misshapen plants: powerful storms could have altered the growth, or inherently elevated radioactivity in the ground account for their crooked growth.

But formal examinations have discovered inconclusive results.

The Legendary Opening

Marius's walks permit participants to participate in a modest investigation of their own. Upon reaching the opening in the trees where Barnea took his renowned UFO images, he gives the traveler an EMF meter which registers energy patterns.

"We're stepping into the most powerful area of the forest," he comments. "Try to detect something."

The plants immediately cease as the group enters into a perfect circle. The single plant life is the trimmed turf beneath their shoes; it's obvious that it's not maintained, and appears that this bizarre meadow is natural, not the result of human hands.

The Blurred Line

The broader region is a place which fuels fantasy, where the line is indistinct between fact and folklore. In rural Romanian communities faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – supernatural, appearance-altering vampires, who return from burial sites to haunt regional populations.

The novelist's renowned character Dracula is permanently linked with Transylvania, and the historic stronghold – an ancient structure perched on a cliff edge in the Transylvanian Alps – is keenly marketed as "Dracula's Castle".

But including folklore-rich Transylvania – truly, "the place beyond the forest" – feels real and understandable in contrast to these eerie woods, which give the impression of being, for reasons related to radiation, environmental or purely mythical, a nexus for creative energy.

"In Hoia-Baciu," the guide comments, "the line between fact and fiction is extremely fine."
